Today's Golfer Expert Review
The Golden Bear has struck golfing gold in Ireland again.
The legendary Jack Nicklaus was responsible for Mount Juliet which opened in 1991 and is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest parkland courses.
However, with Killeen, which opened last year, he’s probably even surpassed Mount Juliet: the estate offered him an expansive landscape of 560 acres, and Nicklaus wasn’t shy in employing it to design a spacious course that offers golfers a view of the historic on-site castle from almost every angle – most notably the uphill approach to the 18th.
Picture-perfect water features appear frequently but it’s the battery of trademark Nicklaus bunkers that will catch the eye.
There’s four tees and the Starter will suggest the one best suited to your ability. Pay heed or you’ll be playing out of deep sand traps all day. Stay on the short stuff and you’ll be rewarded by playing off silky-smooth, prestine fairways.
Killeen Castle was awarded the 2011Solheim Cup before it even opened and with its acres of space and wonderful gallery vantage points on every hole, it should prove the perfect venue.
It’s a top class golfing facility featuring Europe’s first Dave Pelz Golf Academy.
