Course information

Venue for the 2007 Open, Carnoustie is behind St Andrews only as the world's most famous public golf course.

This will be the seventh time the Open has been played here. It is also joint host of the Dunhill Links. Potentially the toughest golf course on the Open rota, Carnoustie is long and tight, with burns hard to avoid – as Jean Van de Velde discovered in 1999.

Par is 72 – SSS is 75.

Golf World Expert Review

A superb blend of beauty and brutality, this world-famous links offers a test on every occasion you play it and is viewed by Golf World as one of the top 10 courses in the country. No golfer's CV would be complete without the word 'Carnoustie' stamped proudly within it.

Today's Golfer Expert Review

Strong points: For a links course, it really is strikingly beautiful; there is plenty of gorse farming the fairways and many of the greens are either raised or perfectly framed in the rolling dunes. Best of all, it's surprisingly playable; in non-Open conditions the course is usually very benign. Weak points: It's a fair bit greener and softer than most traditional links courses, meaning that it plays very long. Into the wind, you'll struggle to reach the longer par-4s in two. Star hole is hard to single out, But you have to say that the insane 17th, with the Barry Burn weaving all over the fairway, is a thrilling challenge. You'll stand on the tee and have no idea what to do!
