Old Tom Morris raised Tain from the linksland in 1890, and the windswept golf course still has a timeless atmosphere.

The River Tain comes into play on three holes – though it might look like six after a visit to the neighbouring Glenmorangie malt whisky distillery.

Tain is an Old Tom Morris deisgn, firmly arrived in the 21st century. The combination of tradition and challenge makes it a must-play in this part of the Highlands. Bordering the River Aldie and the Dornoch Firth, this is the longest course in Ross-shire. You might think that, with all the ptoential trouble around, you should hold back on the driver, but you'll need it to cover the distances effectively. Plot your course and land where you must; there are no neighbouring fairways to bail you out. 01/08/2006
