Course information

“It was the most fun I've had playing golf in my entire life,” said Tom Watson after his first round at Dornoch. Golf is known to have been played here since 1616 the quality of the current test owes much to an Old Tom Morris redesign in 1886.

Remorselessly penal and relentlessly beautiful, Royal Dornoch would surely have hosted the Open if it wasn't for its remote location, 600 miles northof London. For a slightly easier task, you can try the 18 hole Struie layout.

Golf World Expert Review

Raised greens with drop-off points are a regular feature on architectural plans these days, but where did it all start? As an influencer of trends Dornoch's 14th, Foxy, has played its part. The most natural hole in golf, Harry Cvardon called it, as it snakes between himps and hollow without the need for a single bunker.

2009 Course Review

What is it about Dornoch that catches people’s imaginations? Is it the beautiful, classic links layout that has inspired course architecture throughout the world? Is it the towering dunes and spectacular views that, on a day of good weather, take the breath away? Is it the friendly welcome at the clubhouse? It is in part all these things, of course, but there’s something else as well: merely making the pilgrimage here smacks of such great dedication, such utter devotion to the pursuit of golf perfection, that having played Dornoch cannot do anything other than leave an indelible mark on your golfing soul. Everyone who arrives is thrilled with what they find: this is justifiably considered the Open Championship venue that will never be. At a whisker over 6,500 yards it’s about the perfect length for ‘normal’ golfers to be challenged without being ridiculously overstretched. Pick of a superb variety of memorable holes is the iconic par-4 14th, ‘Foxy’, which has long inspired and frustrated with its devilish simplicity and crushingly tough green. The green fee is refreshingly reasonable. An absolute must.

Today's Golfer Expert Review

Further north than Moscow, Royal Dornoch is a pilgrimage every golfer should make at least once in their lifetime. From the moment you step on to the course, an air of calm descends. And no matter what the course throws at you – lightning fast plateau greens, gorse-lined fairways, blind shots, howling winds – you'll still walk off the links with a smile on your face. The 14th is the signature hole – a bunkerless double-dogleg par-4 named Foxy, which leads to a raised, angled green. Make a par here and you'll be telling everyone all about it in the famous whisky bar long into the night. Mar, 06
