How to become a golf instructor?

I’ve been playing golf for a few years and I’m solid but still learning and learning quick. I recently had my first round ever, 112 (because I was mostly very nervous being on the proper course) but I love the game and I would love to teach it as a career.

What do I have to do and how and where? I know I need to lower my score but it’ll easily drop as I feel more comfortable on the course.

I’m 19 turning 20 and living in Edinburgh, Scotland. I’ve been learning in Thailand (still in Thailand) practicing everyday for 5-6 hours on all my clubs on all type of shots at the driving range. I practice my short game at this mini-golf course, first time I got 57 and now I get 34 (out of 28, Par 3, 9 holes).
I’m I being realistic or dreaming stupid?

Thanks.

If you keep this up and use the right kind of mindset you will be teaching in no time! If only everyone had such dedication.

To become a legal Golf Professional (Coach or instructor) You need to get your handicap down very low, about 3. You will also have to have years of knowledge on short game, fault fixing and swing mechanics. Good people skills and patience is neccessary to teach some people (like me)

Ask around at your local club (Presuming you have one) and ask if you can help out teaching. I help coaching juniors and its a great learning expierence and good fun.

Not changing signature until i get into the Lincolnshire junior county squad! started 30.8.09 P.S. might be here for a while

robokolo is right when he said you need to have a very low handicap, but only if you want to be a pga associated pro. Have a look at thw WGTF or EGTF(world golf teachers federation or European golf teachers federation), they run week length courses and you only need to shoot a playing assesment score of 10 over or below i think.

I have looked into it as a change of proffesion when I finally leave the Armed Forces and currently play off 10, I'm realistic in the fact that although my best round is a 73 gross I wouldnt be able to consistently play low enough to go through the PGA route.

another thing to note is that not all coaches/teachers are excellent players, as long as you have an excellent understanding of the ideas and concepts behind the game then theoretically anyone can teach.

good luck whichever route you go down.
