Master the bellied wedge

Drive for show, putt for dough. That’s what everyone tells you. And it’s not just a meaningless cliché. Having a great short game will lower your scores... fact. It’s all very well being able to bomb 300-yard drives but if you can’t get the ball in the hole, every drive is a waste of energy.

Part three of TG’s Love Your Clubs campaign focuses on your wedges and putter – the clubs that get your ball in the hole from 100 yards and in.

There are some situations around the green where a normal chip shot from a fluffy lie can cause the ball to come out ‘hot’ and shoot forward on landing. If there’s also too much rough between you and the green, the bellied wedge is a serious option you should try, as TG Elite Teaching Pro Noel Rousseau explains in this golf video tip.

This shot choice gets the ball bouncing through the rough in front of you and releasing gently towards the hole. The strike on the ball’s equator also allows you to be a little bit more positive through impact.
