Colin Montgomerie was like a volcano poised to erupt at Carnoustie this morning.

The Scot, cheered on by a partisan home crowd, was playing well, very well in fact but his putting problems continued. If his putting was half as good as his precision driving, Monty would be a decent bet to end his majors drought this week.

Monty was hitting some booming drives and following up with some crisp, deadly accurate approach play but all his good work was being frustratingly undone on the greens.

At the halfway mark, he was +1 but squandered a number of birdie chances which would have shot him to the top of the leaderboard. But sadly his recent putting troubles returned to haunt him.

Wearing trousers as grey as the skies above, Monty didn't seem to be enjoying himself and after seeing another relatively short birdie putt slip by on the 8th green he had a face like thunder and let rip with an expletive.

To make matters worse for Monty, playing partner Stewart Cink was putting impressively with his long handled putter.

His new caddie, Craig Connelly, sensed the tension in the air and did his best to help and encourage his boss, regularly berating officials and spectators who even looked like stepping out of line.

He, Monty and the fans were keeping their fingers firmly crossed that the putts would start to finally drop on the back nine. Otherwise the threat of more Open heartbreak loomed large for the veteran Scot...
