A total of 201,000 spectators attended the 150th anniversary Open Championship at St Andrews this year, despite heavy downpours early in the week.

Figures released by The R&A show that 38,000 came through the gates for the practice days, 34,000 on Thursday, 43,500 on Friday, 43,000 on Saturday and 42,500 saw Louis Oosthuizen lift the Claret Jug on the final day.

This figure eclipses the 117,500 people who visited Turnberry for the Open Championship last year.
