Ping’s G2 was our favourite 2005 driver. It has been superseded by the impressive Ping G5. However, we feel Ping has not quite advanced at the same pace as other brands.
No need to worry if you’ve already bought the Ping G5 – this is as solid as ever, just with subtle updates. As the joint longest hitting driver in our test you have to say it is powerful and forgiving, and the half-moon alignment aid is great.
2007 Review
We know what you’re saying: “How can a club priced £239 win our award for the Best Driver for £199. Ping’s recommended retail price for this club is £239, but in reality most golf shops are selling it for £199. That’s why we’ve included the Ping G5 in this category.
If £200 is the most you want to spend on a driver, you really do have some great clubs to choose from – but we think this is the pick of them. It is solid, stable and the titanium head makes the comforting tinking sound we’ve grown to love.
The beefy head builds confidence, with a half-moon alignment aid that really helps to concentrate your focus on the ball. Our pro’s average carry distance of 301 yards means the G5 more than keeps up with its more expensive peers.
It’s worth remembering the head is available in offset and high launch models as well.
