Priding yourself on prudent course management, you take the long iron for safety off the tee on that tight par four. But it all goes wrong when you hit the ball fat and your left wishing you'd just taken the driver in the first place.

A fat or heavy contact occurs when you are too steep with your golf swing into the ball. So if you suffer regularly from this type of miss-struck shot, try this tip from TG's Dan Frost.

Grip the club in one hand and make 5-6 swings. You'll find that the club will swing on its momentum with the weight of the club working on a shallower plane around the body. This is the feeling you want to achieve when trying to eliminate fat shots.
