Keep it simple

Bunker Play

I have playing for 4 years and have got down to a handicap of 11. One of the biggest faults I see from high handicappers is making the game too complicated with too many clubs in their bag. The number of times I hear ..."It's too far for my gap wedge" or "Maybe I need a 3 iron into the wind" from 18+ handicappers while they would be far better concentrating on a few simple low risk shots. I only carry 8 clubs. Driver & 3 wood for off the tee, rescue club for shots over 150 yards and then 6i, 8i, Pitching wedge and sand wedge. Unless you play off single figures, your swing will not be consistent enough to worry about is it an 8 or 9. Always take a little more club, then if don't middle it you still have a good chance of reaching the green and if you flush it, then the back of the green is normally away from the hazards anyway. As for 50 - 90 yd shots, learn to hit half & three-quarter wedges or play a long chip and run with an 8 iron. Unless you are off single figures I know from playing and watching playing these shots will bring far more reward then trying to flush a gap wedge
