My Favourite Hole – Jim Furyk

17th, Harbour Town

Furyk

This hole proves a par 3 doesn’t have to be 220 yards for it to be a good hole. It plays very tough and there’s a lot of strategy involved.

I tend to like holes that are fun to play and look pretty to me – they don’t necessarily have to be the toughest. It can be really difficult with the wind. It can play tricks on you and the green’s really exposed, so if you don’t hit it solid the wind really eats the ball up. The toughest wind would be an into/left-to-right because the green would accept a little draw better because it’s hard to get that ball working and holding it into the wind. Downwind and pin at the front, it’s not too much of a 9-iron. Into the wind, with the pin at the back, it can play as much as 5-iron. I like the long and thin shape of the green.

The pin position dictates whether you can be aggressive and attack it, or have to play it somewhat conservatively. In that case, you’re not really looking at the pin, you’re attacking pockets of the green. Either way, you have to commit to a spot and hit a really good iron shot to hit the green.

If the pin’s front right you can attack it and see some birdies, but you’ll see bogeys when it’s back left. I’d take three there any day, especially down the stretch if you’re in contention. It’s a hard par to make to win a golf tournament and none of the players out here overlook it.
