Top 10 Golf Courses – Cambridgeshire

These courses were chosen by the Cambridgeshire County champion James Reeson (Brampton Park). Handicap: Professional

Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden

Has the best greens in the county – very undulating, very fast and if you end up on the wrong side of the hole, you can be left with some horrible putts. A great mix of holes and the views are amazing with Audley End house providing a spectacular backdrop.

Green fees: £55 midweek, £65 weekends. Tel: 01799 522786.

Gog Magog Old

Gog Magog (Old)

Well designed with bunkers strategically placed to catch slightly off-line tee shots and greens that if missed in the wrong place can make getting up and down incredibly difficult. It’s steeped in history too.
Green fees: From £45 midweek, £70 weekends. Tel: 01223 247626.

Wandlebury

Gog Magog (Wandlebury)

In my book the county’s best layout and though scoring can be easier here than at other courses, it’s still a great test and a course that I love playing.
Green fees: From £45 midweek, £70 weekends. Tel: 01223 247626.

Newmarket

Newmarket

We played a lot of county games at Newmarket and it’s always in fantastic condition: the club is always making improvements to the course and new greens have been constructed on a few holes.
Green fees: From £39 midweek, £42 weekends. Tel: 01638 663000.

Brampton Park

Brampton Park

I used to play most of my golf here and it’s a fantastic test as the course is very tight and has water hazards on most holes. It’s always in brilliant condition too and with a tough start and nish, you have to take advantage of some of the easier mid-round holes to score well.
Green fees: £30 midweek, £35 weekends.

St Ives

St Ives

It’s amazing this course was created from featureless at elds just three-and-a-half years ago. It is open to the elements, so there is always some wind no matter how calm it seems elsewhere. Will get even better as it matures.
Green fees: From £30 midweek,
£40 weekends. Tel: 01480 499920.

Ely

Ely City

A mature parkland course where you have to take your opportunities – back-to-back par 5s early on give you a chance to register some welcome birdies though you need to putt well on the fast greens.
Green fees: From £40 midweek, £50 weekends. Tel: 01353 662751.

Abbotsley

Abbotsley

There are two courses here but it’s the Abbotsley course – a parkland layout with every fairway tree-lined and hard to hit – that really stands out. The holes are great with a mix of short and long, testing all areas of your game.
Green fees: From £35 midweek, £50 weekends. Tel: 01480 474000.

St Neots

St Neots

Classic parkland course and though on the short side, don’t be fooled. What it lacks in length it more than makes up for with tough 90o dog-legs and some of the tightest driving holes around. Beware too of the well-placed water hazards.
Green fees: From £25.
Tel: 01480 476363.

The Cambridgeshire (Bar Hill)

An underrated course and with its length it provides a challenge for the very best. It’s always in great condition too and because it has a bit more margin for error off the tee, it’s very enjoyable to play.
Green fees: £30 midweek, £40 weekends. Tel: 01954 78009
