It is our pleasure to introduce the first ever Top 100 ranking of England’s golf courses, which has been produced in association with Polo Ralph Lauren.

Last month, we began the series with our Scotland ranking and putting this list together was no less exacting. Of course, ranking courses is highly subjective and personal, something we remember every two years when we compile our GB&I list. Somehow, though, these lists are almost proving even more competitive and tricky, as we introduce many courses we had either known little or about or which had not featured extensively enough in our discussions.

Ultimately though, that is the point of this series of Top 100s – to bring even more brilliant courses to everyone’s attention, not least our own. We certainly feel we have learnt more about the courses in, to date, Scotland and England, and discussions surrounding next year’s GB&I list are sure to be even lengthier than in the past – and they weren’t exactly brief in the past.

For this English listing our panel included: double Major winner Tony Jacklin, Ryder Cup star Oliver Wilson, European Tour winner Graeme Storm, broadcaster Bruce Critchley, and designers Martin Hawtree, Ross McMurray and Peter McEvoy. We also had high-class input from the ladies’ game – 2011 Major champion Stacy Lewis and four-time Solheim Cup captain Mickey Walker.
