61 Woburn (Dukes)

62 Little Aston

This Midlands gem had been slipping down the list, but extensive work prior to 2008 saw it rise again. Seven new tees were built while the 17th green was relocated and is now surrounded on three sides by water.

64 Ballyliffin Glashedy

While many of the holes intertwine with the Old course and have a more mature feel to them, others feel like a new, modern links in the manner of a Kingsbarns or Waterville.

It takes a bit of getting to but, like Royal Dornoch, the effort is wonderfully worthwhile. The Machrie has a fabulous little hotel full of character and lodges to house intrepid golfers.

66 The Berkshire (Blue Course)

Herbert Fowler designed the Blue over flatter land than the better Red, but gave golfers an immediate shock – the 1st is a par 3 next to the clubhouse with little in the way of a bailout to the right.

There is barely a top British architect who hasn’t played a part in the development of this Somerset links. The club was founded in 1890 and engaged the services of a young JH Taylor to be the professional and greenkeeper.
