Slaley Hall Golf Club (Hunting Course)

What we say

Widely known as the ‘Augusta of the North,’ Slaley’s Hunting course is equally widely recognised as the top track in the north east. The sensational Hunting was created in 1988 and Dave Thomas’ s part parkland/moorland masterpiece has staged numerous European Tour and Senior Tour events. Signature hole is undoubtedly the stroke index 1 par-4 9th played through an avenue of trees to a well guarded green beyond a burn. Also the home of a luxury Q hotel and 18-hole Priestman course.

Slaley Hall Golf Club is the home of two fine 18 hole golf courses (The Hunting and The Priestman) but the former is the better of the two and its par 4 9th hole is the golfing highlight. Played over a babbling brook and between tall trees and blooming rhododendrons (in season of course), it is aesthetically stunning.

  • 5 out of 5 Fantastic course

A very good course excellent day from start to finish the course was in a great condition. I would recommend the 2 fore 1 any time great value for money, using the vouchers we only paid £50.00 for a 4 ball.

  • Not yet rated Fantastic, but hard course

The previous review posted was for the Priestman Course. The Hunting Course is in a different league, the weather the week before we played was atrocious and the Preistman course suffered, but the Hunting was in great condition with no water in the bunkers. For a high handicapper (23) it was quite a test and some of the holes had very daunting tee shots, but it is still playable and I managed to make a few pars. The only weak link of the course were holes 10-13 which were a bit boring compared to the rest of it, but these do not detract to much from this great testing course.

Group of 20 went to Slaley hall last july for 3 days golf and 2 nights stay, it was pouring down for the first 2 days so the rounds were not completed by most .On the third day both the courses were closed at our tee times but we were told if we waited they may be opened later, two hours later we were allowed to play but not allowed to use the buggies or the bunkers. Nothing the golf club could do with the weather.Would be really good courses in nice weather. We are going to try again this year fingers crossed for good weather.

  • Not yet rated Good Course. Bad weather

A good course ruined by the weather. Although we were lucky and played on a dry day. It had been raining all week prior. This meant that 90% of the bunkers had big pools of water in them. Some so large and deep that balls were lost, other than that the course played well.

We played in late December - it lashed with rain and had been quite windy, the course played poorly, large amounts of casual water across the course and debris from the impressive surrounding woodland. However I cannot wait until the Summer when I'm sure we will be able to enjoy this course at it's best - for now a 3 star but I bet it's a 5 in better conditions
