Hexham Golf Club

What we say

Magical mature parkland close to the river Tyne which also happens to be fast-draining and boasts some of the best greens in the county. A few furlongs from the town’s race course, Hexham has it all: plotted on the south side of the River Tyne, it’s a mature parkland course on fast-draining terrain, a variety of holes, terrific greens and to-die-for views.

If you have played at Hexham Golf Club, you will need no persuasion about the merits of the golf course. If you haven't, you have a treat in store! A traditional parkland golf course on fast-draining land on the south side of the River Tyne, Hexham Golf Club is a tough enough test of golf to regularly host county events, yet at 6,301 from the medal tees it is enjoyable for club golfers of all standards.

The greens are regularly among the best in the county, and the views over the confluence of the North and South Tyne and surrounding countryside are stunning.

  • 5 out of 5 Fond memories

    By David Metcalf

I used to play Hexham on a fairly regular basis and have some great memories of the place but its around 10 years since I last played there. Well, we put that right last week. A beautiful day on a beautiful course. It's not overlong or over-tight and mere mortals like myself can play and enjoy it, that doesn't mean you can't get into trouble! There's lots of long grass for the wayward to catch. The course itself was in magnificent condition, greens, fairways and tee areas are immaculate, it's beautifully kept by the groundstaff. The light rough is deceiving as it's cut quite short but your ball seems to disappear and is quite difficult to get out cleanly. The fairways are generous enough though and perfect lies are the norm. Take note of the trees as you walk around, they are magnificent, some fantastic specimens. The clubhouse is friendly and welcoming and the food is good too. I'll not wait as long to play Hexham again as I did this time.

  • 5 out of 5 One of the best

Hexham Golf course hosted one of our society events (June 2014) and it was one of the best courses we have ever played, a beautiful parkland setting accompanied by friendly staff and great food meant we will be returning to this course in the near future. The course is a stern challenge of golf, with a premium on being straight. The greens were in exceptional condition, fast and true throughout the course. If your game lets you down you will still enjoy the scenery and the respite in the clubhouse after the round. Definitely one of the top three courses we have played and there are many great courses to choose from in the area.

  • 4 out of 5 This is a gem of a course

I completely disagree with an earlier review that the course is disappointing. We played Hexham in October 2008 just after the wettest 2 weeks of the year and the course, although suffering a bit from the abundance of water was holding up incredibly well. From the tee, the 8th hole looks spectacular and the 9th is a wonderfully inviting short par 4 dogleg up hill. The 10th is a really challenging par 3 across a severe slope and downhill which requires a long, straight hit. I have played some really good courses in the UK and this ranks way up there. It's not particularly long or difficult, but it does reward good play and comes with a massive dollop of history. The members we met in the clubhouse and on the course couldn't have been more friendly, but make sure you go on a day when they are serving food. When we went all we could get were chocolate bars from the pro shop.

Course did not live up to expectations. Some good holes but very wide and forgiving fairways lets the challenge down. Greens only fair for what is supposed to be a first rate course. At times difficult to negotiate from one green to the next tee as poorly signed. Have played much better courses in the North than this.

Awesome! If you want to play on one of the best courses in the North East, here's the one to choose. Fantastic holes, perfecty placed through the natuarally carved landscape. You will not be let down from tee to green!
