Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club – West Course

On paper, the West appears a straightforward enough challenge. With a par of 68, it is short with a solitary par 5 and no bunkers. But it’s also fraught with other danger so leave the driver at home. Like the neighbouring Old Course, the West is plotted on protected land, but while the Old glories in its stunning heathland setting, the West is surrounded by lovely woodland sprinkled with heather and is actually the tighter of the two. A championship course in its own right, the West isn’t about power and length but accuracy and course management. The wonderful West course is a more than worthy neighbour for Royal Ashdown’s Old Course. It too is over a century old and shortly after being turned into a full 18-hole layout in 1932, the West staged the English Ladies Championship. Being short in length (there’s only one par 5) and without bunkers – it is plotted on prime public land – the West looks easy prey. But anybody who underestimates it is in for a torrid time, due to the undulating terrain and the importance of hitting spot-on approach shots. The 196-yard, par-3 2nd with its elevated green is a prime example.

Royal Ashdown’s West Course was first constructed as a nine hole course in 1889. It was transformed to 18 holes in 1932 in time to host the English Ladies Championship, the same year that the Ladies Golf Club was given Royal status in its own right.
 
Since then the course has gone through several major developments and today the West Course is open to golfers and societies of all handicaps. Its attraction is that tee time availability, even at weekends, is rarely a problem and there are a number of attractive promotional green fees on offer. Three and four balls and societies are all welcome even at weekends.
 
While the Old Course glories in its heathland setting, the West Course is surrounded by lovely woodland albeit with ample heather. A championship course in its own right, today the challenge lies, not in length, but in the demand for accuracy and course management. Golf writer Frank Pennink's belief that the West Course could equal the repute of the Old, in a different way, is now a reality as more discover its charm and true test of golf.

   Tried the west course today and not that impressed. Not the course I enjoyed that although the greens need a bit of work but the overall unfriendliness from the staff in the pro shop. In these recession hit times golf clubs need all the visitors cash they can get but with a welcome like this we will not be returning.

   If Golf was food. Then this would be McDonalds and Haydock Park would be a Mitchelin Star restaurant. McDonalds is nice and every1 has been their, but the food is made cheaply. Whers a mitchelin star restarant is classy, not as many people have been their but the food is very expensive but has you telling your friends about if for the next 3 months. You know what im sayin, you don't go to your friend " I had a lovely meal at McDonalds on my wedding aniversary". Like you wouldn't talk about this course, you wouldn't tell any of your friends about it. But Haydock you would be tellin your friends for months about it and you would reccomend it to everyone.
