St George’s Hill Golf Club

What we say

Whether you start at the 1st or 10th, you are arguably playing the best opening hole in inland golf – a thrilling prospect from the clubhouse terrace. The unsung hero of the Surrey heathland belt, this course is always well presented and the welcome is fulsome. A really solid Surrey tree-lined course. Just far enough away from the M25 and A3 and heavily wooded enough to feel tranquil and feel like the escape that golf at somewhere like this should be. It’s a friendly club, and perhaps this is a reason why it hasn’t always had quite the same respect/high regard as its local, stuffier, rivals? A special place with a stunning golf course, always in fantastic condition. A class act with a brilliant variety of holes that ease you in on the front nine and can eat you up coming home.

The moment you drive into the rather exclusive estate at St George’s Hill, you know that the golf you are about to play will be special. Harry Colt courses are always exquisitely designed and the three nines carved out of the trees here are among his best creations. The old clubhouse, with its tall chimneys (the old thatched roof burned down) just adds to the unique charm.

Designed by Harry Colt in 1912 and carved out of heather and pine woodland, St George's Hill comprises three very individual 9 hole loops, all starting and finishing by the clubhouse. Most Club Championship and major competitions are played over the better known Red and Blue nines. However, the Green nine, originally part of a second 18 hole layout, now compares very favourably with the other two, and many regard it as the most difficult nine due to its much tighter nature.
