Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey is a very friendly members’ club with an excellent Harry Colt course and first-class catering. The 2014 English Womens Amateur Open was held at the course.

Opened in 1924, this beautiful parkland course with two distinctly different nines was immediately described in The Times as being “on a grand, bold scale, eminently fair, but devilishly ingenious." The club has recently completed a 3-year upgrade of the course overseen by Dutch architect and Colt expert, Frank Pont. The ethos has been to use Colt’s design principles and philosophies, but aligned to modern golfing technology and tastes.

The bunkering in particular is dramatically bolder, offering new strategic challenges and visual splendour. There are some new tees and the course is a little longer with the first and ninth now Par 5s for all. In essence, there has been an improvement to the playing characteristics and enjoyment of every hole and the spectacular 14th is now challenged for the accolade of signature hole by the creation of new tees at the 18th. The catering in the charming 1920s clubhouse is recognised as outstanding by golfers far and wide.

With plenty of competition in this part of the country Tandridge managed to be a memorable day's golf for us. The holes are all different with bunkers that catch the eye and subtle borrows on the greens. The clubhouse is cosy with great sandwiches. Unlike a lot of courses they have thought about the positioning of the ladies tees which are not just plonked 40 yards in front of the men.
