Prestwick Golf Course

What we say

top100It oozes with so much history that if Old Tom popped out of a gorse bush whacking a feathery, we wouldn’t blink an eye. Prestwick is a step back in time to the history of golf. Very quirky and great fun to play. There is affection all round for this grand old lady, whose lack of length is its only negative.

Prestwick was founded in 1851 and is steeped in history – the first dozen Opens were played here. A local caddie might be a good idea if you’re playing quirky Prestwick for the first time - you’re asked to hit several ‘blind tee shots while The Himalayas is a tough 200-yard, par 3 over a massive mound.  The club’s lunches are superb and there are plenty of nearby guest houses and B&Bs where you can stay for £30 each.

Harry Vardon was adamant that the 17th was “the finest hole to be found on any links” and much of the attraction comes from a massive sand trap, just in front of the green. Your second shot is blind over a huge hill called the Alps, but just over the hills lie this very nasty surprise. The flutter in the heart, as you climb up the Alps, and catch your first sight of the green is a bit like getting your A level results – euphoria or deep despair are bound to follow.

The Top 100 Golf Courses in Britain and Ireland

The home of the first ever Open Championship, Prestwick has staged 24 Opens but none since 1925. Only St Andrews has held more than Prestwick.

A true links course with tigh fairways, blind shots and quick greens, it is tricky to get round and a caddy could be a good idea for your first time round.

With an excellent clubhouse, Prestwick ticks all the boxes.

The first ever open was held at prestwickand the whole plaze oozes tradition and history. The belt the early guys won is here and if you ask - you can get a look at it...   the course is quirky and tricky in place but lacks the length and conditioning of neighbours - like troon. well worth playing though and you need to be straight... greens were a bit dicey when i played but onmly because they had just been hollotined...

Just rugged and natural and wonderful. No frills, just good honest golf as it should be. I loved its quirkiness and its natural feel. It's in my top 10 of all time
