Technology

Scotty Cameron has extended his Futura X Line with three new mid-size models. Born from a prototype for one of the world’s best players, the high MOI X5 and X5R provide stability through advanced perimeter weighting with a solid, forgiving feel.

Fitting in between the Newport and Futura X models in terms of size, the X5, X5R and Dual Balance versions of the mallet have a deep balance bar with heel-toe weights plus perimeter weighting under the face.

Combined with a deep centre of gravity, this provides stability through the stroke and at impact with a solid feel. The wingback design on both models features a hollow sole plate to allow for a thicker face for a better feel and sound.

“Futura X putters give players confidence by helping them execute a proper, consistent putting stroke,” Scotty Cameron told TG. “I’m a car fan, I love all cars. BMW has a 7 Series, which has big cars, and a 3 Series, which is the smallest. So the 5 on these putters stands for mid size, the X stands for experimental. When you move the weight out and back, like we see in the X5’s horseshoe shape, the sweetspot gets larger and the moment of inertia goes up.

“The X5 is more an octagon shape – sharper, crispier, boxier. Looks affect confidence and we took them on tour and some guys said they like the curves softer. So we made the X5R – the ‘R’ stands for round. It has the same performance, just with a more rounded look.”

Details: Comes in 33, 34 or 35 inches with a Matador Red Midsize grip. RRP: £279 (£315 Dual Balance).

Reader Reviews:

● MP This is one of those putters that makes a stroke without you having to do much; start it off and the weight and balance keep it moving. It has a lovely shape and feel, is easy to align, and performance was pretty good with very consistent distance control. A putter that combines form and function.

● JC A nice putter with lovely grip, felt good off the face but the aesthetics not my cup of tea. Performance was good though, and I found it easy enough to send putts off on line.

● JCox Feel wasn’t too bad but for some reason I pulled the odd putt left. Of course it could have been my technique. But it had the lovely soft feel you always know you will get with Scotty putters.

● DL This putter was one of those that’s able to join the dots between the eyes, hands and blade. Its balance left you feeling connected to the head throughout the stroke, inspiring competence.

I tried this in the shop and immediately fell on love with it, it feels solid and gets the ball rolling true. Have used it for 2 rounds and seen a marked improvement in my putting, I now have move confidence in my alignment and therefore anm hitting more solid putts.
