Had it not been for the test winner’s stunning performance the TP-11 would have deservedly walked away with the spoils. It’s no surprise to report that World No.1 Luke Donald is using them to good effect.

With restrictions now governing grooves, Mizuno engineers paid more attention to head construction and materials when they designed this wedge. The mild carbon steel offers a great feel, but it also holds the ball for a fraction longer on the face for more traction. Chris loved the appearance, the feel and the sound, as well as the tight leading edge which made it sit beautifully behind the ball.

Mike was super-accurate with it too, making a mockery of his higher handicap. Chris was actually the least pinpoint but the fact that he was on average only 5.9 yards away from the pin speaks volumes for how easy the wedge was to use, even in the hands of the amateur testers.

Results (out of five):

Spin (56 degrees from 75 yards): 7,741 rpm  Looks: 4.5  Feel: 4.4
Sound: 4.1  Around the green: 3.8  75 yards: 5.0  Rating: 4.5 stars

Since the change in the groove rule, Mizuno say they have become more standard and now other factors have become increasingly important when it comes to controlling spin around the green. Their mild carbon steel head provides a soft feel that actually holds the ball a fraction longer on full pitches and on shorter shots, where the ball cannot fully compress, while the CNC Milled scorelines between the grooves help to increase traction too.
