2-FORE!-1 six of the best

There are around 1,000 courses in 2-FORE!-1 offering half-price green fees and here’s the latest weekly pick of the crop.

*Mottram Hall, Cheshire – Classy De Vere stay and play venue a short drive from Manchester. The course itself is a parkland layout with two contrasting nines – the front nine is relatively flat and open while the back nine is rolling and tree-lined. Pick of the holes are the par-3 3rd, the green sitting beyond a pond and being overlooked by a towering tree, and the 17th, a rollercoaster of a par-4 leading to an elevated green. This hole is currently being improved – and made even more challenging – by the widening of a stream just short of the green. When complete, it should prove an even tougher nut to crack – even for the stars competing in the ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship to take place at Mottram in early June.

The venue has been further boosted by an impressively refurbished hotel, clubhouse and spa.

*Heacham Manor, Norfolk – This 2-FORE!-1 newcomer is the perfect base to discover North Norfolk’s many golfing attractions. Located just outside the popular seaside resort of Hunstanton, it boasts splendid accommodation as well as a new improving coastal layout with several water features.

*Forest of Arden (Aylesford course), Warwicks – The Aylesford is a fine foil for the venue’s main attraction, the mighty Arden course. The no. 2 layout is a lot shorter, easier and generally friendlier and is always in immaculate condition.

*Hickleton, South Yorks – An undulating parkland course with magnificent views over South Yorkshire and the East Pennines.

*Elsham, Lincs – Has plenty of pedigree and not just because it’s been around since 1900.This tranquil, well wooded wonderland is the former home of former Open and US Open champion Tony Jacklin who both played and practised at Elsham where he’s an honorary member.

*Montrose (Medal course), Angus, Scotland – Provides a great trip down golf’s memory lane and highlights of a memorable round will almost certainly include the stunning early coastal holes and the 235 yards par-3 16th with its undulating green sitting over a gully.
