*Conwy, Caernarvonshire – a quality links layout in a spectacular location on the North Wales coast. It’s staged a series of top tournaments including Open qualifying, the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open and the prestigious European Amateur Team Championship.
*Gatton Manor, Surrey – A splendidly mature parkland course created by Canadian architect, Commander John D Harris, over half a century ago. You need to carefully plot your way round to avoid the timber and water which features on ten holes while overall the venue has benefited big-time from major recent investment.
*Linden Hall, Northumberland – Impressive Macdonald Hotels stay and play venue with a quartet of cracking par-3s with the downhill 7th, closely guarded by water, being the pick of the bunch.
*Dalmahoy (East course), Edinburgh – The James Braid-designed layout is relatively forgiving off the tee and you can regularly get the driver out. On the other hand you’ve got to steer clear of the many deep bunkers lining the fairways and guarding the big, undulating greens.
* Long Sutton, Lincs – This quirky nine-hole parkland layout sits in an abandoned late 19th century dock basin next to the River Nene and is both fun and challenging to play.
*The Westerwood, near Glasgow – Home of a fine par-72 undulating parkland track created by the late Seve Ballesteros and Dave Thomas and on-site Q Hotels hotel.
