* Musselburgh Old Links, East Lothian, Scotland – If you enjoy your golfing history, you’ll love ancient Musselburgh to bits. The place is simply steeped in it.

Forget St Andrews, this is where golf first started: it’s officially recognised as the oldest golf course in the world – the game was played on Musselburgh Links as early as 1672although Mary Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567.

* Seahouses, Northumberland – Short, fun and quirky clifftop/parkland combination with a pair of stunning short holes. The par-3 10th and 15th holes may be short at 126 yards and 104 yards respectively, but they’re serious potential card wreckers. You’ve got to carry a stretch of water known as Logan’s Loch (10th) while at the 15th it’s a case of clearing the rocks overlooking the North Sea…or else!

*Hellidon Lakes, Northants – Home of 27 holes of undulating parkland golf. The Red and Blue layouts have seven water holes, the most significant being the thrilling but nailbiting 147 yards par-3 finale, the 18th green sitting beyond a big lake slap bang in front of the venue’s boutique Q Hotels hotel!

*Painswick, Gloucestershire – Despite its lack of yardage, nobody takes – or treats – short, quirky Painswick lightly. For starters, the course sits 900ft high in beautiful Cotswold country so it’s pretty exposed to the elements and it’s extremely likely you’ll get a dodgy lie… or three.

*Lyme Regis, Dorset – Top course, top views and even better news is that this clifftop cracker is playable all-year round. In fact the only problem elements-wise you’re likely to encounter is the fog coming off the sea. Otherwise you’re almost certain to find the course in great shape with temporary greens used on average just twice a year.

*Portal, Cheshire – The venue’s superb Championship Course is well supported by the 18 hole Premier layout and the nine-hole Aderne course while off-course you can unwind in style in the luxury modern Macdonald hotel and spa
