2-FORE!-1 Six of the Best

This week’s special 2-FORE!-1 Golf collection includes a historic Scottish links, one of the oldest courses in Wales and a quirky James Braid coastal layout in Cornwall.

*Heythrop Park (pictured), Oxfordshire – A 2-FORE!-1 newcomer, this refreshing modern Tom Mackenzie parkland layout plotted within an historic estate. There’s a fine mix of holes though you need to avoid the Jesuits graveyard skirting the left side of the opening hole! Star hole is the stunning driveable par-4 6th though a solid strike is required to clear the river guarding the green.

*Perranporth, Cornwall – This Braid gem dramatically overlooks the popular holiday town’s glorious beach and is full of quirks, twists and turns as you’re regularly required to hit several ‘blind’ drives, usually over giant sand dunes. You’ll never play a more demanding par-3 than Perranporth’s sensational 197-yards 4th.

*Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales – Created by James Braid with a considerable helping hand from Mother Nature, Tenby is a stunning links with several unique holes, fast and undulating greens and superb views across to Caldey island.

*Moor Allerton, West Yorks – Robert Trent Jones’ first design in Britain offers 27 holes of fine parkland golf with all three loops – all as good as each other – beginning and ending in front of the clubhouse.

*Montrose Medal, Angus, Scotland – Ancient East Coast links, this crusty old course dates back to the 16th century or at least records show the game being played here at that time. There are two parts to the modern Medal, the first basically following the lines of the dunes and beach while the second plays back towards town before returning to the dunes.

*Forest Pines, North Lincs – Dubbed the ‘Woburn of the North’ and designed by John Morgan, Forest Pines offers three sets of nine holes around the majestic timber and into open heathland. The longest, most popular and arguably best 18-hole selection involves the not-so-imaginatively named Forest and Pines loops.
