With the warmer weather finally on its way, what better way to spend a few days in the sun than out on the golf course? We’ve compiled our Top 10 venues that offer both 2-FORE!-1 (so you and a friend can play half price!) and accommodation, for that well deserved golfing break!
1 – The Belfry
Legendary Ryder Cup venue with three 18-hole courses, including the mighty Brabazon layout, fantastic practice facilities and hotel which has recently undergone a major multi-million pound refurbishment programme, enabling the world-famous venue to deliver off the course as well as on it!
2 – Prince’s
This historic links has staged an Open Championship and offers 27 holes of quality seaside golf nextdoor to Royal St George’s along with splendid accommodation within The Lodge which opened in time for the 2011 Open Championship at St George’s. The venue has benefited big-time from a recent on-course renovation carried out by European Golf Design.
3 – Manor House
Magical rollercoaster of a parkland track plotted amidst 365 stunning acres of breathtaking Cotswold countryside and a short drive away from exquisite Manor House accommodation. It’s all about location, location, location as far as the Manor House is concerned and, being far away from the madding crowds, no wonder celebs and sporting superstars such as Justin Rose and Kevin Pietersen love it to bits.
4 – Trevose
This superb links is even tastier than the tastiest of Cornish pasties. It’s a Harry Colt classic and is ably supported by various accommodation options featuring lodges, flats and apartments. The on-site facilities are pretty special too and include a smashing clubhouse, swimming pool and tennis courts.
5 – St Mellion
The pride and flagship venue of Crown Golf, St Mellion is arguably the best resort in the south west and with two 18-hole courses, including the legendary Nicklaus, on site it’s a golfing paradise with the Kernow layout also providing its fair share of thrills and spills too. The hotel rooms are comfortable and spacious with many overlooking the final hole of the formidable Nicklaus track.
6 – Slaley Hall
Has been the leading north east venue for a number of years and as well as offering a luxury hotel, golfers can check out the superb but contrasting Hunting and Priestman courses. The hotel boasts excellent all round facilities, including a splendid spa, and grounds though there’s no doubt the Dave Thomas-designed Hunting layout, a former European Tour venue, is the chief attraction.
7 – Fairmont St Andrews
A superb resort just outside the Home of Golf, Fairmont St Andrews has everything including a luxury hotel with world-class facilities and a pair of clifftop golf courses (Torrance & Kittocks). Has hosted a number of prestigious events, including both the Open Championship’s final qualifying and the Scottish Senior Open, plus been a venue for both Northern Ireland peace talks and a G20 Summit.
8 – Celtic Manor
A world-class venue next to the M4 and arguably the scene of the most dramatic Ryder Cups of all time in 2010. It’s the home of three 18-hole courses, quality accommodation in two on-site hotels – plus new Lodges – and facilities to-die-for. The mighty Twenty Ten Ryder Cup course doesn’t feature in 2-FORE!-1 but this resort’s other two strong layouts – the Roman Road and Montgomerie – do.
9 – The Mere
A real Cheshire cracker, The Mere is the home of a quality undulating James Braid parkland layout overlooked by a modern hotel with a sumptuous spa. You can warm-up in style on the novel driving range by hitting floating balls into a lake! North west-based Premier League footballers love this place and former Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson is among its many admirers.
10 – Luton Hoo
Classy, historic venue where PM Winston Churchill once addresses thousands of local folk to thank them for their tank-making efforts during World War II. The luxury hotel is absolutely sensational and is handily situated close to both the airport and M1 motorway. Youi’ll also enjoy the outstanding amenities on offer including the challenging parkland course though unusually there are no bunkers to worry about (the course is plotted on protected land).
