Chris Wood In The Bag: Qatar Masters Winning Clubs

Englishman Chris Wood has finally ended his European Tour drought after an incredible final hole eagle helped secure him the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

The 25-year-old had seen his three-shot overnight lead turn into a a two shot deficit before the turn, but a strong run of holes, including his eagle at the last – to win by one – secured him his maiden title.

Wood came to the par-5 last one behind Sergio Garcia and George Coetzee, but a 320-yard drive, a 202-yard 6-iron to 10-feet and a nerveless putt saw him celebreating.

The Mizuno staffer has previously finished as runner-up three times and had collected 19 top-10s.

“There’s an enormous weight lifted off my shoulders today,” he said. “I feel like I can go on and win more. I knew it was going to be hard no matter how I played – winning on The European Tour is not easy.

“I’ve been knocking on the door in previous times and it’s not happened. To get it today, to get my first win, it’s such an honour. I’m so pleased.”

“I’ve seen a few mates picking up trophies and I’ve been waiting patiently for my time. I felt like I was due to win for a couple of years.” As for the eagle, Wood added: “Nice way to finish!”

His win will take him from 142nd in the world rankings into the top 64, who will contest the WGC-Accenture Match Play in Arizona next month.

Coetzee recorded his 21st top-10 finish, despite a superb 65 containing an eagle and six birdies. Garcia joined the South African on 17-under-par when he birdied the final two holes for a 66.

It was a remarkable effort from Garcia given he missed a four foot birdie putt on the 2nd and double bogeyed the 223-yard 3rd.

Swede Alex Noren and England’s Steve Webster tied for fourth, while Justin Rose’s 68 for joint 16th kept him at fourth in the rankings.
