Cobra add colour with new BiO CELL range

Published:

The new Cobra BiO CELL family for 2014 includes two drivers, woods, hybrids and a cavity-back iron, all in the funky colours the brand is famous for. But there’s plenty of substance amid the style.

Topping things off is an all-new BiO CELL driver, which features a 460cc head and 0.5 inch longer shaft than the more compact, lower-spinning BiO CELL+  which is 440cc and aimed at better players.

Both come in five colours, including black, compared with four options for the AMP CELL range, and they have two additional loft settings via Cobra MyFly adjustable loft technology, bringing the total number to eight. They are longer than last year’s AMP Cell drivers thanks to their 50 per cent lower centre of gravity (CG), which makes the new model launch an average of 1.2 degrees higher than AMP Cell with about 300rpm less spin.

A lower CG was made possible through Cobra’s “BiO Cell” technology, with changes to the walls of the head inspired by strong, lightweight structures found in nature such as spider webs. A webbed pattern is prominent on the crown and sole of the titanium head.

Cobra’s low-spin 440cc BiO CELL+ driver also comes in five colours and features an ultra-light “TOP Technology” (Thin, Optimised, Personalised) “Venollum alloy” crown, which is 4.1g lighter than the titanium crown on the BiO Cell, to lower the centre of gravity by 50 per cent. This translates into a higher launch with lower spin, a recipe for more yards. The crown inserts are painted blue, orange, silver, black or red, while the surrounding areas of the driver head are white to aid alignment.

BiO CELL fairway and hybrid

The fairway wood features a 17-4 stainless steel body with 455 high strength steel face. This “driver-like” construction enables more face flex for faster ball speeds and a higher trajectory.

Both the fairway wood and hybrid feature the same hot “E9 Face Technology” found in the driver and eight adjustable loft settings to maximise distance, manage trajectory and optimise yardage gaps.

Details: fairway £189. 3-4: 13-16°, 5-7: 17-20°. Project X-PXv shaft. Hybrid £159. 16-19°, 19-22° or  22°-25°. COBRA BiO CELL shaft.

BiO CELL irons

Tungsten weight position raises the MOI in the long irons and provides control and workability in the short irons. A perimeter undercut gives the largest unsupported face of any Cobra iron for more face flex at impact.

Details: £549 steel (4-PW), £649  graphite (5-SW).
