FIRST HIT: Callaway Big Bertha irons

Callaway’s new Big Bertha irons are built like hybrids to help golfers achieve more distance. In fact, Callaway say they could make you up to two clubs longer with your irons, meaning you’ll be hitting a 9-iron into the green rather than a 7-iron – and we all know which is easier to hit.

“This is a remarkable new technology,” Dr Alan Hocknell, Callaway’s head of R&D, told TG. “It takes our cup face from our fairway woods and hybrids and introducing it into the construction of an iron for the first time. That allows us to have the face more flexible by having more of the body take part for more ball speed. They’re easy to launch and blisteringly long in some of the tests we’ve seen.”

We took the irons to Thorpe Wood Golf Club in Peterborough to see if the performance lived up to the claims.
