TaylorMade’s new AeroBurner woods

First we had the big distance claims of RocketBallz. Then came Stage 2 and the JetSpeed followed. Now, TaylorMade has unveiled AeroBurner – a family of “fast” woods. From the aerodynamic crown design to the fin on the hosel, everything about AreoBurner is designed to boost ball speed.

“The name burner is all about speed, plain and simple,” said TaylorMade’s Brian Bazzel. “This is the most aerodynamic clubhead we’ve ever made. We tested over 125 different clubheads, which represents over 400 different aerodynamic runs in a wind tunnel to observe how flow over the crown changes, how drag changes. The hosel fin and the crown design enhance the aerodynamics.”

The aerodynamic design works with a larger, deeper Speed Pocket behind the face to create a larger sweetspot with more face flexibility and a reduction in spin.

“We have a slot that drops the spin by 700rpm and the product is going further,” added Bazzel. “Over the course of the year we test over 200 prototypes to spread COR and reduce spin, constantly pushing what a golf club can do.”

The family features a driver, fairway woods and hybrids, all in a matte white finish with a black face and crown graphic to make alignment easier.

Justin Rose has already tested the fairway, saying: “I want everything out of a fairway wood, which is why I’ve always struggled. As soon as you put it down the fist thing you notice the crown lines. It looks like an aerodynamic difference for sure. It launches higher, I got it up to 17°, which was crazy. My ball speed is amazing now, up to 167mph, not far short of my current driver.”

Details: Fairways RRP £199 (3, 3-HL, 5, 5-HL, 7). Rescue RRP £159 (3, 4, 5, 6). On sale January 9.

THE DRIVER

Aeroburner driver

TaylorMade says the AeroBurner is its fastest and most aerodynamic driver yet. The 460cc head has a rounder toe, raised centre crown, a reduced drop from crown to skirt and new hosel fin. A larger Speed Pocket is said to help reduce spin, while the black face and white crown aid alignment.

Details: RRP £269 (9.5º, 10.5º, 12º, HL). On sale January 9.
