Ian Poulter leaves Cobra Puma

Ian Poulter has confirmed he’s leaving Cobra Puma golf for a new equipment manufacturer.

The flamboyant Englishman has been with the brand since 2006, when Cobra was owned by Acushnet – parent company of Titleist.

He revealed the news on Twitter, saying: “I’ve had a very good eight years with Cobra/Puma but it’s time to move on. Very exciting new chapter.”

Poulter has been a prominent ambassador of the Cobra Puma brand, appearing in magazine and TV adverts alongside stablemates Rickie Fowler and Jesper Parnevik.

He says he’s expecting to reveal details about which equipment he’ll play soon, but there are only a handful of equipment companies that could take on the Ryder Cup star, who will command a large signing fee given his popularity and TV exposure.

Whoever he signs with will also need accommodate Poulter’s own IJP Design clothing range, which he wears. That probably rules out Nike, with insists its athletes are top-to-toe in the brand.

TaylorMade is an obvious candidate, as he use to play the brand when he first came out on the European Tour. The only stumbling block there could be its parent company adidas, though Martin Kaymer plays TaylorMade and wears Hugo Boss clothing.

Callaway had an aggressive marketing campaign last year to sign more your pros and it now has a huge stable of names. There is no clothing conflict, so the two may be a good fit. He also already uses an Odyssey putter. Poulter also uses a Titleist Pro V1 ball, so he already has a strong relationship with that brand. When Geoff Ogilvy left Cobra when it was sold to Puma by Acushnet, he went to Titleist.
