Cobra reveals see-through King LTD driver

Cobra has unveiled a futuristic driver with a ‘Spacesport’ sole weight that makes the head seethrough.

The King LTD driver (standard and Pro models) has been designed with help from the Centre for the Advancement of Science in Space – and it’s a radical design with some ingenious tech.

The two most obvious are the removable “Spaceport” sole weight and a “Textreme” carbon fibre crown.

These two innovations move weight lower and deeper in the clubhead to make it easier for you to up your launch angle and lower your spin rate – both vital ingredients of longer drives.

The ‘Spaceport’ is a 16-gram removable aluminium weight in a high-tech plastic which lets you see the technology inside the head.

It’s held in place with “Spiralock,” a thread technology that was designed to cope with high vibrations and saves 6g of weight in the head. A key lets you remove the Spaceport so you can see the internals of the clubhead.

The other big innovation is Textreme, a carbon fibre material which is said to be 20 per cent stronger than standard carbon. This allows engineers to make the crown thinner and lighter, again saving weight.

The drivers come with a 12-gram tungsten weight in a rear weight port. Along with the Spaceport, it can be adjusted to meet custom swing weights.

Elsewhere, Cobra has used Ti-811 titanium for the bodies and the faces. It’s stronger and lighter than the titanium used on the old drivers, and required Cobra to redesign its E9 face tech (which sees a variable thickness face boost ball speed on areas away from the sweetspot).

It also features Cobra’s “Speed Channel” around the perimeter of the face to boost ball speed on off-centre hits.

The King LTD comes in lofts of 9-11 degrees, while the Pro model comes between 7 and 10 degrees.

Both the King LTD and King LTD Pro come fitted with Aldila’s Rogue Black 60 shaft (R, S and X flexes).

The King LTD fairway woods also feature Textreme crowns, which are 15g lighter than steel.

The wood also has a removable Spaceport that moves weight lower down to increase launch angle and allow people to see in the internal workings. Unlike the drivers, the fairways have stainless steel faces.

They are available in two models – 3-4 woods (13-15.5 degrees) and 5-7 (16-18.5 degrees).
