Great Big Bertha is back

It’s almost 25 years since the original Great Big Bertha was launched. At the time the driver changed the game and was quickly adopted as the #1 on Tour. With such pedigree its no surprise Callaway have decided to redesign and relaunch this legendary model for 2015.

Callaway engineers had a real challenge creating a Driver worthy of the legendary Great Big Bertha name. Their lab-coated technicians have come up with an ingenious way of incorporating all their best technologies into a single driver head. They’ve also eked out extra aerodynamic performance, increased the MOI and created more ball speed. Sound a bit far fetched? This is how they’ve done it:

Tech

Next Generation R-MOTO Face

From our experience testing the R-Moto face on Callaway’s XR Driver we know it has the capability to power shots out there with the best of them. Improving upon it is really impressive. Callaway have done this by thinning out areas of the face so off centre hits drop less ball speed, which for you means more distance when you don’t hit the sweet spot.

Improved Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics play a bigger role in golf equipment than ever before. Callaway say the Great Big Bertha’s head shape reduces drag, which helps improve club speed.

Tech

Adjustable Perimeter Weighting

Callaway’s slide track weighting system makes changing your Ball Flight bias really straightforward. Simply move the weight from Draw to Fade depending on your game and preference. A trade off of the slide track is it also improves the clubs overall forgiveness meaning the GBB is Callaway’s highest MOI driver.

Weight options to suit your swing

We don’t get really excited about shafts very often but Callaway’s idea with the GBB is well worth highlighting. The GBB will be available in four different shaft weight options. Meaning the overall weight can range from 295g to 325g which is a huge variant when it comes to drivers. This allows you to choose which combination best suits your game, which we reckon is a real step forward.

How does the new Great Big Bertha compare to previous models?

New GBB v 2014 Big Bertha

The new GBB has a similar MOI to last years model but its centre of gravity is lower. It has more draw capability and benefits from the R-Moto face technology. The head is 3g lighter and total weights show a saving of 21g if you choose the Bassara shaft and 9g if you opt for the KuroKage.

New GBB v Big Bertha 815

Expect a much higher MOI than the original 815 with more draw bias capability and a significantly lighter set up. The head is 7g lighter and total weights show a saving of 25g with the Bassara and 13g lighter with the KuroKage.

New GBB v V Series

GBB is the same weight as the V Series but has a higher MOI, lower centre of gravity and the powerful R-Moto face to boot. So basically the new GBB takes the best of the V Series and the best of 815 and roles them into one super driver.
