25 Years Of Golf

Today’s Golfer is 25 this month. To celebrate, we’ve investigated how the game has changed in a quarter of a century, including what’s been happening since 1988.

In his first column in the first issue, TG’s launch editor, Bill Robertson, wrote: “Welcome to this first issue of Today’s Golfer, the new monthly magazine that golfers have asked for and which they have been instrumental in launching.

“Over 15 months of research and discussion with groups of golfers around the country has produced a wealth of information and ideas. And it will be the policy of Today’s Golfer to reflect and encompass many of these suggestions in the magazine.

“Simple, easy-to-follow tuition came high on the list of priorities among the golfers we talked to. Interesting places to play also figures prominently in our research findings. You asked for more equipment, so Today’s Golfer has answered this call by featuring a regular Club Test series. And top names from the professional game will figure prominently in the kind of informative and entertaining articles that will soon become synonymous with the magazine.”

A quarter of a century later, those sentiments still ring true. TG’s remit is you help you play better, buy better and choose better. So join us in looking back with misty eyes over the last 25 years.

Here we go through the archive to remind ourselves what’s happened in golf since 1998, from tournament moments to equipment launches.
