Amateurs lord it up at The Open

This is the year of the amateur at The Open.

A glance at the leaderboard a short while ago showed three amateurs in there battling it out with the best players in the world for the biggest prize in golf.

Surely there hasn’t been such a hotly contested race for the Silver Medal – awarded to The Open’s leading amateur performer?

For the past couple of days we’ve been waiting for the amateurs’ challenge to slip away and for them to disappear from the scene with their tails between their legs. Amazingly, and thankfully, that hasn’t happened and full credit to the non-pros involved for keeping it that way and their stickability.

Ireland’s 22-years-old Paul Dunne (-12) has taken most of the plaudits – and finished -6 for the tournament – but you’ve got to hand it to England’s Ashley Chesters (pictured) and America’s Oliver Schniederjan too. Big time.

European Amateur Champion Chesters had clawed his way to -10 after firing a front nine 32 while Schniederjan’s dream Open was fittingly rounded-off with a 67 (-9).

The amateurs have done the Open and golf proud this week.
