Fantasy Golf: Wells Fargo Championship Preview

The 2013 Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game returns to the PGA Tour this week at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.

Now in its 11th year as host of the Wells Fargo Championship, the 2013 course sets up at a record 7,492-yards. However it’s not all about bombing it, as the fairways are among the hardest to hit on the PGA Tour, with Quail Hollow ranked third-lowest in driving accuracy (47.59%) for the third straight year in 2012.

It’s greens are no easier to find either, having been the the toughest on tour from, 2007-2011, they dropped down to the third toughest in 2012.

So, you need somebody who hits a long, straight ball and who either finds plenty of greens or is a good scrambler.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for the Ballantine’s Championship:

Lee Westwood £3.8m

The Englishman has collected top 10s in each of his last two starts, including a T8 finish at the Masters. He also tied for fifth at Quail Hollow last year and ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in scrambling and 16th in adjusted scoring.

Sergio Garcia £3.0m

The Spaniard lost in a playoff in 2005 and finished T28 in 2011. He is also in hot form, sharing eighth at the Masters, tied for 12th at the Open de Espana and claiming eight top 20s worldwide this year.

Webb Simpson £2.8m

The American recently lost to Graeme McDowell in a playoff – his third top-six finish of the season – and currently sits 29th in greens in regulation, 17th in adjusted scoring and even finished fourth here last year.

Nick Watney £2.4m

Three 69s last time out helped Watney claim his second straight top 15, while six top 25s in eight trips to Quail Hollow include a eighth place finish last year.

Bill Haas £2.1m

Hass co-leads the PGA Tour in 2013 with five top 10s, while he is also eighth in greens in regulation and 13th in scrambling. Two fourth-place finishes and a pair of T22s in nine appearances at Quail Hollow also make for good reading.

D.A. Points £0.8m

Since losing in a playoff at Quail Hollow last year, Points has recently made four consecutive cuts, including a win in Houston and a second place finish last week in New Orleans.

Others to consider…

Rory McIlroy

The world number two holds the course record here and won his first PGA Tour title in 2010 at Quail Hollow. He also lost in a playoff last year and is well rested since sharing 25th place at the Masters.

Bubba Watson

Bubba reeled in a T15 finish last week in New Orleans after opening with a one-over 73 and finished as a runner-up at Quail Hollow in 2009. Currently sixth on Tour for greens hit and first in birdies or better on par 4s, he’ll be one to watch.

Rickie Fowler

The American owned a sparkling record at Quail Hollow before breaking through for his first PGA Tour victory in last year’s playoff. Three top 10s this season and a ranking of 20th in fairways hit and 22nd in scrambling means he should contend.

Lucas Glover

The 2011 champion has four top 10s in nine trips to Quail Hollow and is in good form after holding the 54-hole lead in New Orleans last week.
