Fantasy Golf: Memorial Tournament preview

The 2013 Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game is back on the PGA Tour this week for the prestigious Memorial Tournament, hosted by Jack Nicklaus at Muirfield Village.

This event always attracts one of the strongest fields of the year outside the Majors and eight of the world’s top 10 will be playing this week.

Muirfield Village, which is also hosting the Presidents Cup later this year, is a par 72 that measures 7,352 yards. It’s a second shot golf course that favours accurate iron players and good scramblers.

Birdies come at a premium here and the track’s scoring average of 73.677 last year was second highest of all par 72s in non-majors.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for the Ballantine’s Championship:

Tiger Woods, £5.5m
The world number one already has four wins to his name this season. His win here last year was one of five at Muirfield Village in 13 starts. His outstanding record here is boosted by another three top 5s. Leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting, adjusted scoring and a number of other relevant stats.

Matt Kuchar, £3.6m
He finished runner-up at Colonial last week and has top 10s in his last four trips to Muirfield Village. Ranks 14th in scrambling, 25th in strokes gained putting and 8th in adjusted scoring.

Ernie Els, £2.4m
The 2004 champion lists this course among his favourites and boasts top 15s in half of his 20 appearances here. He has five top 15s in his last seven starts, including 6th at last week’s BMW PGA Championship.

Jimmy Walker, £1.3m
The world number 62 leads the PGA Tour with 23 consecutive made cuts. His record features four top 10s and another four top 25s this season. Sits 28th in greens hit, 24th in strokes gained putting and 10th in adjusted scoring.

Kevin Streelman, £0.8m
His missed cut last week ended a run of three top 10s. He won in Tampa Bay earlier in the season and ranks 20th in greens in regulation, 26th in strokes gained putting and 9th in proximity to the hole.

Billy Horschel, £0.7m
Recorded four top 10s, including a win at the Zurich Classic, before a missed cut at The Players. Currently 10th in strokes gained putting and 4th in par 4 scoring. He’s making his debut at the Memorial.
