Fantasy Golf: RBC Heritage preview

After a thrilling opening event, the triple-weighted Masters won by Bubba Watson, the TG Fantasy Golf game heads to Harbour Town Golf Links on the PGA Tour this week for the RBC Heritage.

Created by Pete Dye, who updated the track in 2011, Harbour Town stretches just 7,101 yards and boasts many short-hitting shot-makers as champions, including Graeme McDowell, who defends last year’s playoff victory over Webb Simpson. Placement off the tee is crucial to success here, even lies in fairways could create obstructed approaches to the green due to sharp turns and low-hanging tree branches.

McDowell tied for fifth in fairways hit and finished T7 in greens in regulation last year. He also led the field in scrambling and ranked sixth in strokes gained-putting. It’s this kind of precision that this week’s winner will likely possess.

A moderate threat of rain and possibly thunderstorms populates the forecast on Friday and Saturday, but the primary test pre-cut is expected to come in the form of sustained winds of at least 15 mph.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for the RBC Heritage:

Jim Furyk, £2.2m
Second in all-time earnings here with a win (2010), two seconds and three more top 10s. Coming off T6 at the Valero and T14 at the Masters.

Luke Donald, £3m
He missed the cut on the number at the Masters but his record at Harbour Town is better than most. He’s had two seconds and two thirds in his last five starts.

Matt Kuchar, £3m
Arguably the most consistent player on Tour at present. His T-5th at the Masters was his fifth straight top-five finish. While he hasn’t broken par in his last five final rounds but look for Kooch to accumulate a big lead and stumble home on Sunday.

Graeme McDowell, £2.8m
The defending champion may have missed the cut at the Masters, a course he tends to struggle on, but he leads the PGA Tour in the Strokes Gained Putting stats and sits ninth in adjusted scoring this year.

Kevin Stadler, £1.3m
Impressed at the Masters on debut with a T-8th finish. Has won already on the PGA Tour this year in Phoenix and finished T-4th at Harbour Town in 2012.

Jerry Kelly, £0.9m
Playing some of his best golf right now with three top tens this season. His accurate driving suits this course where length is not a huge factor. Finished 5th here last year.
