Fantasy Golf: Deutsche Bank Championship

Published:

The FedEx Cup Playoffs continue this week as the top 100 players in the standings progress to TPC Boston, a course that historically produces a lot of birdies and a low winning total; Henrik Stenson triumphed here last year with a 22-under par total. There are some notable absentees from those who have qualified. For various reasons, Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia won’t be teeing it up.

The 7,216-yard layout in Norton, Massachusetts, was the most difficult par 71 on the schedule at +1.611 strokes to par in 2006. Thanks to numerous changes and scoring and spectator-friendly enhancements by Hanse Golf Course Design, TPC Boston has averaged under par in every edition since. The Deutsche Bank Championship is scheduled to start on Friday start and finish on Labor Day in the States. Here is TG’s six-man team:

Rory McIlroy, £5.5m
After three straight wins, McIlroy had a lot of off-course commitments prior to the Barclays and by his own admission didn’t practice enough. He still managed a T22 with a bogey-free 65 in second round. Winner at TPC Boston in 2012.

Matt Kuchar, £3m
Recovered quickly from his sore back with a T5 at The Barclays, his 11th top 10 of the season. He finished T4 at TPC Boston last year.

Ernie Els, £2m
His T5 at The Barclays was first official top 10 in a stroke-play non-major in 28 months. Also tied for seventh at Valhalla three weeks ago and finished T20th in Boston last year with four rounds in the 60s.

Bill Haas, £1.9m
No top 20s in last four editions of the DBC, but he’s coming off a co-runner-up at Sedgefield and a T15 at Ridgewood with a strong all-round game.

Rickie Fowler, £1.8m
A T9 at Ridgewood was his fifth consecutive top 10. His adjusted scoring is down 1.276 strokes since the FedEx St. Jude Classic, a win is surely just around the corner.

Cameron Tringale, £0.8m
Fresh off a career-best T2 at The Barclays. Two top fives in last four starts; three since April. A solid budget option.
