Rory favourite for BBC Sports Personality Of The Year

Rory McIlroy remains the odds-on favourite with the firm at 4/9 following his triumphant summer, winning both The Open and PGA Championship, however a late gamble is developing on Lewis Hamilton who is now just a 13/8 shot.

One punter who was that confident in the Irishman’s chances of landing the elusive prize placed a wager of £10,000 on him doing so at odds of 6/4, and as the momentum grew McIlroy was quoted as short as 1/8 in October.

And with the front two in the market sewn up, the bookies are now betting on the athlete to finish in third place, and it’s Jo Pavey who’s fancied for a podium finish at 13/8, followed closely by Gareth Bale at 7/4.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “McIlroy might be the favourite, but clearly Hamilton’s championship win is still fresh in punters’ minds. It’s a two-horse race, but if the money’s correct it looks like we’ll see Hamilton with the trophy on Sunday evening.”
