Fantasy Golf: Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Published:

After last week’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, the focus of the golfing world remains fixed on Scotland and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Four members of Europe’s winning team – Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Victor Dubuisson and Stephen Gallacher – have made the short trip to St Andrews for this week’s unique event.

As well as the celebrity pro-am competition that runs alongside the main event, competitors play their opening 54 holes over three different courses – St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns – before the week’s best head back to the Old Course for Sunday’s final round.

Carnoustie is the longest and generally sees the highest scores during the week, meaning low numbers are required at the other two venues with scores of 22 under par or better winning the last three renewals.

Rory McIlroy, £5.5m
He’s likely to be tired but that demolition of Rickie Fowler in the Sunday singles last week means Rory remains too good to leave out.

Ross Fisher, £1.6m
David Howell scored a reinvigorating win here last year and fellow Englishman Fisher needs something similar. Solid week in Wales last time where he closed 68-69.

Tommy Fleetwood, £1.4m
Southport boy likes the links. Has three top-5s in his last five starts and was fifth here in 2013 and 2011.

Shane Lowry, £1.2m
Signs are good for the Irishman. Runner-up at Celtic Manor a fortnight ago. He’s on a run of seven straight cuts and was third here last year.

Marc Warren, £1.0m
Scot would be a popular winner on home soil. Finished fourth in Wales and was fifth here in 2011.

Edoardo Molinari, £1.0m
Trending in the right direction. Last three finishes have been 13-11-4. Record here isn’t great but was 22nd in 2012 and he’s worth keeping faith with.
