Charley chasing victory in Tenerife

English teenage ace Charley Hull (pictured) is among a star-studded line-up that is relishing the chance of visiting the sunshine island of Tenerife to play in the Tenerife Open de Espana Femenino this week.

Hull will be joined by the likes of 2013 Solheim Cup teammates, Spanish home favourites Azahara Muñoz and Carlota Ciganda, and defending champion Lee-Anne Pace in a high-class field that will compete over 72 holes for a total prize fund of €350,000 and first prize of €52,000 at Golf Costa Adeje, from September 18-21.

South African Pace beat Sweden’s Mikaela Parmlid by one stroke to win in 2013 but faces a tough task to defend her Spanish Open title with the entry list also including five tournament winners on the 2014 Ladies European Tour – Trish Johnson (Scottish Open), Julie Greciet (Czech Open), Florentyna Parker (Italian Open), Kylie Walker (Dutch and German Opens), and Hull (Morocco).

This year will be the fourth time that Golf Costa Adeje has staged an event on the European Tour and Hull, Pace and Munoz are thrilled at the prospect of playing in Tenerife on the par-72 layout, which hosted the Tenerife Ladies Open in 2005, 2008 and 2009.

Hull, who has rapidly risen to 30th in the world rankings after only turning professional last year, will be playing in Tenerife for the first time and said: “I’ve never been to Tenerife before but I’ve heard that’s its perfect for golf with a warm climate year round and lots of sunshine. When I won in Morocco it was in similar weather so I’m really looking forward to the Tenerife Open and hopefully I can earn my next Ladies European Tour win.”

Pace said: “I really look forward to going to Tenerife every year. The people are really nice and the climate is fantastic. I love the ocean, I feel like I’m on holiday when I am there, so it is a very relaxing week. The atmosphere is great and I can’t wait to get back there.”

Muñoz added: “I’ve been to Tenerife twice. I played in the Tenerife Open at Costa Adeje in 2008 when I was an amateur and then played a charity event couple of years ago. I love the weather because it’s always warm and sunny and I really love the people of the islands; everyone really seems to enjoy life, they are laid back and tend to smile a lot. I love that about people!”

Tenerife has won widespread praise as an all-year-round golfing destination this summer having also staged the Fred Olsen Challenge de España on the Men’s European Challenge Tour, at La Gomera, in May.

Blessed with average summer temperatures of 23⁰, more than 70km of beaches and a wide range of cultural highlights and activities both on and off the water, Tenerife offers the ideal location for a golf break.
