Fantasy Golf: BMW Championship

The penultimate week of the FedEx Cup playoffs takes us to the Cherry Hills Country Club. Finding a ‘horse for the course’ is not easy this week as the Colorado venue hasn’t hosted a main Tour event since the 1985 US PGA Championship. The remaining 69 players (Dustin Johnson is the sole absentee) tee it up this week hoping to secure their place in the top-30 and a shot at the $10m bonus at next week’s Tour Championship.

Close to the ‘Mile High’ city of Denver, the altitude means Cherry Hills plays considerably shorter than its 7,466 yards. It is perhaps best known for providing the stage for Arnold Palmer’s only US Open win in 1960 after a remarkable final round comeback which started when he drove the green at the 346-yard par four opener. Longer hitters will certainly have an advantage but the course’s small and fast greens mean precision with the approaches will be the biggest challenge this week. Here is TG’s six-man team.

Rory McIlroy, £5.5m
Showed a few signs of fatigue during last week’s final round at the Deutsche Bank Championship but still finished tied-5th. He’ll want to protect against a dip in form ahead of next week’s Tour Championship and this is a course he could overpower.

Jimmy Walker, £2.4m
Missed the cut at The Barclays but returned to form last week, finishing tied-9th after shooting 68-67 at the weekend.

Jim Furyk, £2.2m
Mr Consistency has finished outside of the top-20 just twice in his last 15 starts. One of those came last week (tied-23rd) but he likes this event having clocked up six top-20s since 2007.

Bill Haas, £1.9m
Former FedEx Cup winner (2011) clearly likes this time of year and is one of only two players to finish in the top-15 in the opening two legs of the Playoffs.

Kevin Stadler, £1.3m
Tied-16th in Boston last week and is ranked 14th in Greens in Regulation on the PGA Tour.

John Senden, £1.3m
The Australian finished tied-5th last week where he was also joint first in GIR. Was tied for 22nd at The Barclays the week before.
