Fantasy Golf: ISPS Handa Wales Open

Published:

A week before the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, the European Tour heads to the scene of Europe’s last success on home soil. Colin Montgomerie’s side regained the trophy on Celtic Manor’s Twenty Ten course and four of this year’s team – Lee Westwood, Thomas Bjorn, Stephen Gallacher and Jamie Donaldson – are looking for inspiration here this week.

With rain forecast at the par 71, 7,352-yard layout, it is likely to be a week for the longer hitters, though a solid wedge game is also key with the par 5s unreachable in two for most.

Gregory Bourdy won here last year after finishing runner-up in 2011. The Frenchman birdied his last three holes to finish on eight under par and beat American Peter Uihlein by two shots. Here is our line-up this week…

Lee Westwood, £3.0m
Well rested after three weeks off due to early FedEx Cup exit at The Barclays. After a poor season has made his last three cuts including two top-20s and will be desperate to head to Gleneagles in good form.

Joost Luiten, £1.8m
Billy Horschel’s form shows it’s the time for proving your Ryder Cup captain wrong. Luiten made Paul McGinley’s shortlist but came up short. Fourth here last year and runner-up in 2012.

Pablo Larrazabal, £1.4m
A third round 75 at the KLM Open last week cost him dearly as he finished fifth behind Paul Casey. Fourth here in 2011.

Robert Karlsson, £1.4m
Shot four sub-70 rounds in Holland last week as he finished in a tie for 28th. Won this event in 2006.

Edoardo Molinari, £1.0m
Part of Monty’s triumphant 2010 side here, Molinari opened with back-to-back 66s last week before finishing in a tie for 11th. That was his fifth straight made cut, three of which have yielded top-15 finishes.

Robert Rock, £0.8m
Fifteenth here last year and fourth in 2010. He was 19th in last week’s KLM Open where he was in the top five for driving accuracy and greens in regulation.
