The Open: Legends of The Old Course

Every golfer dreams of being crowned Open champion at St Andrews. It’s the Home of Golf, the cradle of the game, where the tight links turf has been trodden by every great player who’s ever lived, from Old Tom to Tiger Woods.

But few golfers experience the feeling of lifting the Claret Jug in front of the imposing R&A clubhouse… of hearing the applause echoing around the Auld Toon’s streets… of winning golf’s oldest Major in the place where it all began.

The Old Course has hosted a Major 28 times since 1873 (most recently in 2010), more than any other venue. Scot Tom Kidd won the first one here, pocketing £11 in the process.

The list of St Andrews champions reads like a who’s who of golf – Old Tom Morris, JH Taylor, James Braid, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Seve Ballesteros…

But only six St Andrews winners are alive today – Peter Thomson, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, John Daly, Woods and Louis Oosthuizen. It’s one of the most exclusive clubs in golf. We spoke exclusively to each of them to find out what it’s like to conquer the Old Course and kiss the Claret Jug in the Home of Golf as the Champion Golfer of the Year.
