Oleson saves card with Dunhill win

Thorbjorn Oleson bagged biggest win of his career at The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday.

“To win it on St Andrews, it is something you dream of when you are a little kid,” said the 25-year-old Dane, who has now won three times on the European Tour. “All the hours I have put in this year has paid off.”

The world number 155, who began the final round with a three-shot lead and needing a good result to secure his 2016 playing privileges, carded three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey in the first five holes.

Nine pars followed before the Dane holed a spectacular 50-foot birdie putt on the 15th to give himself a two-shot lead which he never surrendered to the chasing pack. He eventually finished on 18-under-par, having recorded 25 birdies over the four days.

Olesen added: “When I won my first one I started off badly also, so I was very patient out there. Holing that putt on the 15th gave me huge confidence that I could get the job done, and my lag putting on those big greens had been sharp all day, but I was also pleased with how I struck the ball and my game-management too.

“It has been a tough season, but I’ve worked hard and winning at a place like this is the reward. It was one of my goals to win before the season was through, and I’m very happy to have done that,” he added.

One new product that Olesen had in the bag this week in Scotland was the Nike Vapor Fly Prototype 3-wood.
