Jason Day targeting PGA success at Baltusrol

Jason Day is focused on defending his USPGA Championship title this week after finishing tied for 14th at the Canadian Open.

The World Number One shot a final round 67 last year to finish the week on -20, three clear of Jordan Spieth.

Day told reporters that he will not be taking to the Lower Course at Baltusrol in Springfield, with the mentality of defending his title instead he is out to win it.

“Defending’s great, but I won it last year,” he said:

“I never really look at it as defending. I always want to try and win it again, and that’s the mentality going into it.”

“I’d love to do it again this year and that’s all I can focus on.

“I had another fun week in Canada, unfortunately I didn’t have my best stuff, so I have got to kind of rest up and get ready for next week.

“I’m hoping that once I get in there, get a rest on Monday, start practicing Tuesday, Wednesday, I should be good to go.”

The Australian struggled on slow greens at the Canadian Open and is expecting a tough test at Baltusrol.

He said: “I’m assuming that they are on top of it. I haven’t played the course yet, so I couldn’t tell you how — from what I’m guessing, I know it’s going to be fast.

“I think they are going to put a lot of water down, though, because I think we are expecting 90-plus degree weather, and they obviously don’t want to lose those greens.”

Day has been in great form of late and seven of his ten PGA Tour wins have come in the last year.

His victory in the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, was his first major win and he is the joint bookmakers’ favourite for the event at 8/1 alongside Rory McIlory and Dustin Johnson with William Hill.
