June13 Cure your chipping yips

The US Open is being played on a long, tough course this week, so the world’s top pros will have their work cut-out to break par. Expect to see the pressure on their short game to make up and down and score well. One area of their game that needs to be red-hot is chipping and this is something you should work on too.

Make the most of the light evenings after work, hit the chipping green and try this simple drill. Pop a pencil in the back of your glove hand and then practice making your chipping stroke. You should feel the back of the left wrist stay very firm as you swing the club through towards the target. The pencil will prevent your wrists breaking in the action, allowing a smoother stroke. The result: a pure strike and perfect distance control.
